Evidence
Herbal medicine draws its wisdom and insight from a diversity of sources. From tradition to organoleptics, folklore to phytochemistry, and systematic research to empiricism — there is a wealth of evidence that supports the use of plants as medicine. Together, sensory perception, ancient texts, and scientific study interweave to offer a rich web of knowledge and understanding that guide human–herb interactions. The evidence-based approach adopted by biomedicine utilises a defined hierarchy to evaluate how different data types may be used to inform clinical practice. Modern phytochemical research works to these standards and builds on previous knowledge, continuing to inform our practice and furthering our understanding of how to safely and efficaciously work with herbs as medicine. Here we share articles that explore herbal evidence: what research exists? how do we find it? what are the limitations? and, how can herbalists contribute?
