Immune system
The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that protects the body from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. It relies on innate and adaptive immunity to recognise and eliminate foreign antigens while maintaining tolerance to self-antigens. White blood cells, including lymphocytes and phagocytes, orchestrate immune responses and immunological memory. Dysregulation of the immune system can lead to pathologies such as immunodeficiency — primary (genetic) or secondary (i.e. from HIV and chemotherapy), where the body cannot mount an adequate defense, or autoimmune diseases — such as rheumatiod arthritis, psoriasis or multiple sclerosis, where the immune system targets the body’s own tissues. Explore our immune category to learn of conditions that arise due to immune dysregulation, how they present, their pathophysiology and how individuals with these conditions may be supported by herbs and holistic care.
