热 or 熱 rè is the warmest end of the temperature spectrum and these herbs can disperse cold and warm the yang. Aconite (fu zi, Aconitum napellus) is the hottest herb in the Chinese pharmacopoeia, followed by cinnamon bark (rou gui, Cinnamomum verum) and dried ginger (gan jiang, Zingiber officinale).
Hot herbs should be avoided in hot conditions and long-term use may be drying.
